October is Breast Cancer Month

24 Oct

I’m sure everyone knows that the month of October is Breast Cancer month.

The risk for breast cancer is very high.  The last statistic I read is that 1 out of 8 women are expected to get it during their lifetime.  I’m sure if you think about it, you’ll realize that you know someone who has had it.  I personally know 3 survivors.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women.  After lung cancer, it is the second leading cause of death for women.

We must educate ourselves about the risks, and know the early detection signs.

Ladies, you’re advised to perform self-exams once a month, every month, if you’re between the ages of 20-39, with general physicals once every 1-3 years.  If you’re between 40-49, also do monthly self-exams, with annual physicals and mammograms every 1-2 years.  And for women above 50, mammograms and physicals must be performed once a year, with monthly self-exams too.

Well, doctors do not yet know what the causes of Breast Cancer are, but its important to know what the risk factors are.  The factors that increase the risk are alcohol consumption, being overweight, not having children, having your first child after 30, longtime exposure to radiation, taking birth control pills for longer than 5 years, and taking any hormone replacement therapy medication to help with menopausal symptoms.

And as they say, “The best protection is early detection”.  Make sure you do monthly self exams, and let’s help spread the awareness!

Tim Hortons in Dubai

23 Oct

Tim Hortons is finally heeeeeeere!! (well not quite in Kuwait…but close)

Tim Hortons is the Canadian equivalent to Starbucks in Kuwait…  They have one on almost every corner on every street in Canada… The best coffees, flavored cappuccinos, bagels, muffins, donuts, sandwiches… Ah…the nostalgia…

So I was super excited when I saw it on the Sheikh Zayed Road end of September, and made sure I went.  I found out that they had just opened, and it was pretty obvious judging by the long lines that extended outside the store! After waiting in line for about 20 mins (yes 20 mins!), I finally took a sip of that french vanilla cappuccino and immediately knew that the wait was well worth it!

Where is Tim Hortons in Dubai?  Its on the Sheikh Zayed Road next Starbucks.  Drive passed the Crowne Plaza and the Sheraton Four Points.  And, if you’re using the Metro, its right next to the Financial Center Metro Station 2.

Light Dessert

15 Sep
The other day, our family got together for lunch…
We went to Wow looking for dessert.  We usually end up buying their chocolate cakes, but this time we saw a Muhalabiya dish covered with mangoes, strawberries, blackberries and decided to try it…. and we were very pleasantly surprised.
It was light, fruity and just the perfect amount of sweetness!

And, from the inside:

It may look a little messy...but it tasted amaaazing!

This one was a definite hit with the family.  We’re buying this one again for sure 🙂

Yummy Dessert

14 Sep

Every time we get together for lunch, we expect to have great-tasting dessert afterwards.

This time, we got a chocolate cake from Wow and the Opera mille feuille.

Our family loved both, though I feel the need to warn you, if you can’t handle very rich chocolate, you should eat this cake slowly…

And here’s what the cake looks like from the inside:

And, my brother-in-law’s favorite mille feuille ever:

Needless to say, the calories are well worth it!

Drink up!!

13 Sep

Lets face it, water is colorless, odorless, flavorless..basically boring..  but the thing is, I don’t think people know how essential water is…

60% of our body weight is made up of water…it helps flush out toxins, moistens our tissues, and has the important job of carrying nutrients to our cells.

After reading up on it, I actively forced myself for the last month to LOVE water.  Its become a habit for me now…  Trust me, its definitely much better for you than soda, coffee and processed juices.  Its the only zero-calorie drink out there!

So, how much water do we need?

Well, ladies we need to drink around 2.2Liters a day (which is around 9 glasses), and men around 3 Liters (13 glasses).

It might seem like a task at first, but once you get used to it, you’ll love it.

So when are the best times to drink up?

When you first wake up: 2 glasses which will help with your blood circulation and flush out toxins

30 mins before every meal: 1 glass of water to help with digestion

Before getting into bed: 1 glass of water

And don’t forget to keep a bottle of water next to you at all times!

Story about a Pulitzer Prize Winner

12 Sep

I was recently told about this by one of my friends:

Kevin Carter, a South African photojournalist, took this picture of a starving girl in Southern Sudan back in 1993, and ended up winning the 1994 Pulitzer prize for it.  (The Pulitzer Prize is an annual international award given to journalists and writers.)

Sadly, this story doesn’t have a happy ending.

Two months after he received his prize,  Kevin Carter committed suicide.

The public critisized him for taking that picture instead of helping the starving girl.  I’ve found 2 versions of how the story ended, the first was that he took the little girl to a UN camp, and the second was that he didn’t know want happened to the girl.  But both versions thankfully said he scared the vulture away.

His friends apparently said he was a very sensitive man, who was deeply affected by his work assignments and couldnt psychologically handle the atrocious conditions he saw.

Why would a Pulitzer Prize winner commit suicide?  I guess too much critisizm from critics and his sensitivity made it unbareable for him to live.  Well, on the other hand, his photograph brought a lot of pulicity to the problems with living conditions and famine in Sudan, so he surely left a great legacy.

As for us, we should be thankful for everything we have, and its never to late to help out people in need.  Seeing pictures like this one puts real faces to stories you only hear and read about.  If you search online, you’ll easily find several websites through which you can donate.  🙂

Dark Chocolate…Healthy?

31 Aug

Dark chocolate is heavenly..and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, turns out, its actually good for you.

Because its derived from cocoa beans, which grow on trees, its filled with natural plant nutirents.  It has natural antioxidants (same stuff  that made green tea, red grapes and blueberries so famous), reduces blood pressure and hypertension, and improves cardiovascular health.  Plus, mood-elevating chemicals– so it makes you feel better!

I think doctors should start prescribing dark chocolate instead of medicine… Hmmm…Maybe someday..

Enjoy responsibly… too much consumption may lead to unwanted side effects, such a weight gain 🙂
